Dance Pedagogy (DANC 330 1995)
Students are exposed to methodologies and materials for teaching creative movement, arts-integrated lessons, technique, and composition. Movement expression and learning styles are understood by means of application, deconstruction, interdisciplinary study. Cultivating creativity, building original lesson plans, observations, and practice teaching in the Atlanta community are at the crux of each student’s development. Students develop communication, leadership, and creative skills.
In 2024, this course embraced Emory’s ART and Social Justice philosophy. In collaboration with actor Antonio David Lyons, movement and theater practices helped students better understand their identity and strengthened their capacity to teach empathy and compassion. The course culminated in a project entitled, Entangled: The Heart of Connecting, a playful movement workshop that began with breath and engaging movers in creative decision-making and a re-defining of home. By exploring inner and outer connections, participants felt a sense of grounding, belonging, and acceptance.
The students explored these questions: “How do we identify and cultivate a sense of home(belonging) within a community?” “Where does home live in your body?”
“Lessons of privilege, identity, and community can be applied to almost every social interaction that I have.”
