Let the Body Lead
To develop a poetic sensibility in the body, the spine returns to developmental sequences and the limbs pursue an animalistic grace. We arrive in this effortless manner by playing and acting with curiosity, by living in the body’s center, and by interrogating what we know by using our imaginations. The practice of moving from our senses encourages a wholistic fullness and teaches bodies to shed, allow, explore, listen, interact, respond, play, and compose.
That said, everybody is unique in how they approach an improvisational prompt or continue to move from that initial impulse. I see it in the way they enter space, develop timing, and express dynamics. If they stay in a mode of experimentation, the body will illuminate sensations and deepen awareness and presence. If they stay connected to sensation, there is ongoing feedback.
The imaginative brain will expand the initial entry point, “What if I explore all surfaces?” “What if the bottom of the body is communicating with the top?” What if these surfaces represent something other than what they are? There is more opportunity for the body to lead if we follow sensation, if we learn to trust it.
